Case Studies
The following case studies have been added by our readers. Please add more if you know of them!
- Dual Radio Construction. Another great thing from the AirJaldi mesh in Dharamsala. They compiled an OpenWRT with support for several USB Wifi adaptors, then loaded that into a Netgear wireless+usb device (unfortunately no longer sold), put the pc board into a weatherproof box with POE, and presto! An inexpensive, 4 watt, outdoor 2-radio router!
- Dharamsala Wireless-Mesh Community Network The Dharamsala Wireless-Mesh community network came to life in February 2005. At present day (October 2005), the Mesh backbone includes over 30 nodes. Broadband Internet services are provided to all mesh members. The total upstream Internet bandwidth available is 6Mbps. There are over 2000 computers connected to the Mesh. The Mesh network is based on a hardware device, which is designed, and built locally, known as the Himalayan-Mesh-Router.
- Cotonou-Wireless is a community group which is run on a non-profit making basis. It all started when Mathias Houngbo and his friends were shopping around for an affordable internet connection. They formed an association to provide wireless internet access to users throughout the capital city of Cotonou in the Republic of Benin. Full article at Balancing-Act Africa.
- World's Longest WiFi Link. Our friends and colleagues Ermanno Pietrosemoli, Javier TriviƱo and Carlo Fonda have managed to establish a 279km link in Venezuela using WiFi technology. Inexpensive WRT54G radios re-flashed with open source software were used, with large antenna but without amplifiers. This is a demonstration of the true potential of the wireless technologies for the development, a true contribution from their region for the world. A complete report with photos is available here (6.3MB).
- SchoolNet Namibia. With 583 000 learners and 17 000+ teachers in Namibia, only some 200 schools had (basic) access to internet. And as we talk of bridging the digital divide and bringing Information and Communication Technologies closer to the people, SchoolNet Namibia has been doing just that. Its main objective is to introduce computer technology and Internet access to ALL schools in Namibia.
- Nepal Wireless Networking Project is a great example of a wireless net in rural Nepal. The Nepal Wireless Networking Project is now maintained and run by Himanchal Higher Secondary School, Nangi village, Nepal, with Mahabir Pun as the team leader. About 8 villages in very poor, rurual area connected, via various relays. Worldlink, a commercial ISP in Kathmandu, gives them great support.
- Wireless Ghana Akwapim Community Wireless Network developed and managed by the Apirede Community Resource Center - helps to make Internet access in rural communities a reality.
- Mt. Everest Base Camp and Namche Cybercafes 652kb pdf file.
